Colorado Honor Band Association is committed to reaching students a diverse array of communities and to celebrating the musical achievements of band programs throughout the Denver metropolitan area. Below are some examples of ways in which we engage with our community.
Band Director of the Year Award
CHBA bestows this award annually on one outstanding local band director. We invite our students to nominate their school band directors for this award, which was created to celebrate excellence in music education. Learn more or submit a nomination.
Denver Boys and Girls Club
Thanks to special funding from One of Ninety-Nine, we offered weekly band classes for students at the Wilfley Branch of the Boys and Girls club for 5 years at no charge to families. The students participated in all of the CHBA programming, including workshops, performances, and summer camp. This was a very successful program, and we are very proud of the participants who are now playing in our Advanced Band. We are also very excited that these students participated in our 2016 tour to Austria and the Czech Republic thanks to the students’ own fundraising efforts as well as partial scholarships from One of Ninety-Nine. Vital outreach activities like our Boys and Girls Club project come to life thanks to creative ideas and special donations from our supporters.
We perform yearly collaborative concerts with adult ensembles, including Denver Concert Band, Denver Brass, and Denver Municipal Band. These collaborations strengthen the camaraderie among local music groups, and they heighten our collective community impact by attracting wider audiences and by inspiring students to stay involved in the arts later in life.
Local Band Festivals
Our staff members are frequently on demand as guest conductors and adjudicators for band festivals. We have also helped to organize and staff the Littleton Elementary Band Festival and various Denver Public School honor bands festivals.
Our staff are also on demand as instrumental coaches for local school bands. We additionally have a mentorship program in which our music educators visit schools and offer one-on-one coaching and small-group instruction. These school collaborations strengthen local band programs by maximizing student progress. We mentor music teachers throughout Littleton Public Schools as well as Denver Public Schools including Hill Arts and Sciences Middle School.
